HOW ARE MIGRAINE HEADACHES TREATED WITH ACUPUNCTURE?

MIGRAINE SYMPTOMS:

Migraines are signified by debilitating headaches that often occur on one side or one half of the head (unilateral) but may also present itself as bilateral. The World Health Organization has stated that severe migraine attacks can be as disabling as quadriplegia. Migraines are more prevalent in women than in men and can present itself as a life-long condition. It is often chronic with a reoccurring pattern that is complex to treat. The symptoms associated with migraines are moderate to severe head pain, nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound (visual, sensory and motor symptoms). The disabling pain is usually very intense and can last from hours to days. Many migraine sufferers have reported that all they can do is find a dark corner and curl up or a quiet place to lay down.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

Some possible causes are environmental, food and diet, changes in sleep pattern, genetic factors, neurovascular disorders, hormonal imbalances, contraceptives, estrogen replacement, and certain associated triggers. Diet triggers include alcohol, MSG and Tyramine found in aged cheese and preserved meat. Environment factors include weather change, exposure to light, temperature change, fluorescent light, computers, strong odors, and high altitude. Emotional triggers such as stress, anxiety and mental fatigue are also possible causes.

TREATMENT:

Modern medicine offers a variety of drug medications to numb or suppress the pain in the form of narcotics, analgesics and barbiturates. Other medications take on an abortive (to stop it once it starts) or preventive (to help migraines occur less frequently) approach. The abortive medications include pain relievers, Triptans, Ergot, Anti-Nausea medication, Opiates, and Dexamethasone.  Preventive medications include cardiovascular drugs (Beta-blockers), Antidepressants, Anti-seizure drugs, Cyproheptadine, and Botox. These drugs are prescribed by neurologists and other specialists and may be administered orally or through injections and shots. It is common for migraine sufferers to be on theses types of medications for many years. Other therapies include arterial surgery, muscle surgery, Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation (TENS), Occipital Nerve Stimulation (ONS) and physical therapy.

The US Headache Consortium identified the following goals of long-term migraine treatment:

  • reduce attack frequency and severity, reduce disability,
  • improve quality of life,
  • prevent headache,
  • avoid headache medication escalation, and
  • educate and enable patients to manage their disease.

ACUPUNCTURE TO BENEFIT MIGRAINE HEADACHES:

Acupuncture has been established and utilized for over 4000 years and is a safe and effective method of treatment for patients debilitated by migraine headaches. Acupuncture encourages the body to promote natural healing, improve functioning, and promote and restore health. This is done by inserting very thin needles and applying heat or electrical stimulation when needed at precise acupuncture points. Many patients find acupuncture to be a tremendous benefit because they no longer have to rely on chemical drugs or shots to numb or dull the pain of migraines. Often patients seek acupuncture therapy after exhausting other avenues of treatment. In many incidences, acupuncture is able to prevail when pain medications won’t even work. This is because acupuncture triggers the release of natural endorphins and other natural chemicals that are stronger than morphine. Theoretically, natural medicine states that where there is pain, there is problem. Since migraine headaches are a result of an underlying imbalance within the body and this balance needs to be put back in harmony. Acupuncture helps strengthen blood circulation, unblock the organ systems and seeks to remove blood stagnation. Acupuncture is FDA approved and is safe because no drugs or hazardous equipment, such as x-rays, are used. There are no irreversible procedures, such as surgical operations, performed. There is not even a hypodermic needle involved. Many MDs and registered nurses refer patients for acupuncture because it is beneficial in treating migraine headaches.

CASE STUDIES

British Medical Journal March 15th Issue
Researchers divided 401 adults aged 18-65 years old with chronic headaches (at least two headaches a month) into two random treatment groups. Participants had a history of having mostly migraine headaches. One group received up to 12 acupuncture sessions during a three-month period in addition to standard medical care, and the other group received standard care alone. A year later, researchers found those who received acupuncture:

  • Experienced 22 fewer days with headaches
  • Took 15% fewer days off sick from work than the control group
  • Used 15% less medication
  • Made 25% fewer visits to their doctor
